FAQ

What is a charter school?
A charter school is a public school that contracts with the district to operate. The school is still held accountable for results and students participate in state testing. In exchange for accountability, the school has more freedom than a traditional school.

Does NWES charge tuition?
Like all public schools, NWES is tuition free.

Who can attend NWES?
Whether looking for a challenge, a new way to learn, or struggling to keep up, any student entering 6th through 12th grade can attend.

What would a typical day at NWES be like?
While days at NWES are designed for maximum flexibility in order to capitalize on "teachable moments", each day will be a combination of student-driven and teacher initiated projects. At least once a week, students will work outside in the field. Unlike field trips, students will not be passively receiving information. On these field days, students will work on projects that make a difference in the community and are closely connected with classroom projects. At the end of a field day, students should feel a sense of accomplishment and be tired and dirty!

How important is academic rigor at NWES?
Academic rigor is a key component of Northern Waters. Students will have daily opportunities to engage in rigorous learning experiences in all of the core subjects to prepare them for success in high school and beyond while being productive members of the greater community. Like all schools in Wisconsin, students must meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and are responsible for learning the Wisconsin Common Core Academic Standards.
